Hidden Order is a performance for architecture. Commissioned by Casa Batlló Contemporary to mark the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death, the work translates the movement of a single dancer into light across the façade of one of his most celebrated buildings.
Gaudí drew his forms from the natural world. Bone, tendon, wave and shell shaped the curves of Casa Batlló, and the building has often been read as a body. Hidden Order takes this idea literally, bringing two kinds of order together. One is the geometry Gaudí found in nature and fixed in stone. The other is the living geometry of a body in motion, fleeting and never repeated. As they meet, the façade appears to loosen, to remember the forces that first shaped it, and to move.
Choreographed and danced by Fukiko Takase, with music by Daniel J. Thibaut, the building becomes a performer for a few minutes each evening, and the order hidden in its surface is made visible.
