HSBC commissioned United Visual Artists to create an installation for the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow airport as a signpost to the China Design Now show at the V&A. Inspired by the exhibition and the idea of sharing experiences of different cultures the sculptures use algorithmically structured neon light and Chinese characters to explore the nature of Chinese language. China Design Now is open to the public from 15 March to 13 July 2008.

United Visual Artists have created a new site specific work for the Oyane Plaza, in the Roppongi Hills district of Tokyo, to mark the opening of UK-Japan 2008. Contact is a responsive floor based installation which allows visitors to use their kinetic energy to generate audiovisual forms that will interact with the user, and communicate with each other. Contact marries advanced computer vision techniques, physics simulation and a unique display surface to create an experience that aims to highlight the results of peoples interactions with each other, and their environment.

  • Hereafter. In situ at the Mori Tower, Tokyo

In addition to the world premiere of Contact, the British Council supported the installation of Hereafter on the 52nd floor of the Mori Tower, Tokyo as part of the launch of UK-Japan 2008.

Hereafter deals with the very human issues of memory and perception - how spaces are changed over time by human presence - or lack of it. The piece resembles a conventional mirror, but upon closer inspection reveals itself to be something else entirely. Hereafter forces viewers to re-evaluate how time continues without our consent or control.
