Transforming Public Space- Panel Debate.
June 7th 2009 ACMI, Melbourne
Hosted by The Light in Winter Artistic Director Robyn Archer, UVA director Chris Bird and producer Keri Elmsly shared a lively discussion with local artist Domenico de Clario, Andrea Kleist (Public Art Program Manager for City of Melbourne) and Marcus Westbury. The panel discussed UVA's work in the context of the role of public art in the re-energising of urban public space and the particular use of new technologies. Once upon a time a bronze statue or a fountain was the norm: what are the factors that have caused them to be superseded by more ephemeral and transitory forms such as projection, screens, sound and light?

Deus at The Smithfield Gallery
June 3rd – 26th, 2009 The Smithfield Gallery, 16 West Smithfield, London, EC1A 9HY
Deus is a photographic exploration of the seductive quality of artificial light in the natural world. This body of work grew from an extended study of form and experiments on how a powerfully illuminated presence affects the surrounding environment. As urban dwellers we are attuned to illuminated space; so with Deus we decided that all of the post-industrial natural locations we explored would be devoid of this artifice. The work can be read as a deadpan comment on the sleight of hand inherent in all ‘worship’.

Hereafter at Riflemaker
May 1st- 30th
Riflemaker, 79 Beak Street, Regent Street, London W1F 9SU
Hereafter is about memory and perception; and how spaces can be affected by what has happened in them over time. As the viewer approaches the work he appears to be looking into a mirror, but on further inspection, echoes of previous visitors are apparently intermixed with the current viewer’s movement and presence. Hereafter captures seemingly banal events/actions and represents them as significant fragments of time. The piece is presented on an extremely high-resolution screen in a portrait format in order to mimic the experience of self-observation in a mirror as closely as possible.
Originally commissioned by English Heritage.

Chorus.
Commissioned by Opera North Projects
Private View February 5th 18.00
The Harewood Assembly Rooms, Leeds
To celebrate the opening of the Howard Assembly Room, Leeds, Opera North Projects have commissioned United Visual Artists to create a site specific response. ‘Chorus’ is an array of pendulums of light and sound, suspended from the ceiling of the auditorium. The concept arose from the search a simple and unifying relationship between light and opera. Each pendulum has unique score, an individual ‘voice’ which can be heard when moving through the paths of light, but together they form a chorus of light and sound. Structured through three distinct phases the sound is created by Mira Calix from abstracted live recordings with Opera North musicians.
